A few years after atomic had been introduced to the internet chess community, there was a strong community developed of strong players (akin to the development of the bughouse community). However, unlike bughouse — there was always a chance to truly know who the best player was and that was put into action during MEWIS’ second life. Four server championship events were held in succession according to the rules set forth by MEWIS. Those consisted the only known world atomic championships held so far in the history of atomic that would even come anywhere near being considered ‘acceptable’ (these words were written in 2002).
I even had the privilege of serving as the tournament director for the second atomic match. So it seems that I’ve even secured my own position within atomic-lore for perpetuity as the TD for the second Atomic Match. But I would hope that wasn’t the only thing that people remembered me for, and that my other accomplishments within atomic secure my place within the history of atomic chess.
